Roberto Cavalli: A Love Affair with Animal Print

Animal print is never out of fashion. It hovers about in the fashion trend stratosphere, moving in and out of the lime light every few years. Animal inspired prints have been a style staple since the mid 20th century, when they were used to show social status within aristocratic circles. From there leopard, zebra and jaguar print became habitual within popular culture, dressing rockstars of the 1970’s such as Rod Stewart, Debbie Harry and Marc Bolan, and helping cultivate their iconic status.

Roberto Cavalli has been at the forefront of this trend since the 1990s, and the fashion house continues to use and rework much of the same prints to this day. The veteran Italian designer’s creative inspiration comes from his love of travelling to exotic places. When speaking in 2009 he explained how he wanted to exhibit the photographs that inspired him to create these prints –

My dream in the near future is to create a big exhibition that would showcase my (photographs) from Africa and other exotic places. I used to shoot subjects for my prints and my passion has evolved.”

These wild designs have been inspired by animals of Africa, South America and Asia, and Cavalli has managed to put his own signature style to them. Our classic Roberto Cavalli tableware collections are directly influenced by Cavalli’s catwalk designs, including the Tigress and Jaguar designs. The designer is known for his love of animals, but specifically large exotic cats, and this is reflected in the catwalk and homeware collections.

The Roberto Cavalli Home Interiors collection for 2021 is wholly inspired by the textures and shapes of Africa, and we can see that the design team have revisited the classic Tigress print for this years furniture pieces. The italian made collection is called The Wild Living, and includes earthy tones mixed with luxurious materials to create a versatile mix of luxurious furniture and home pieces.
